Climate is returning to the top of the global agenda as the developed world emerges slowly from Covid. Courts, governments, multilateral institutions and businesses all over the world are on paths that will make it almost impossible for India to raise money internationally for new coal-fired power plants. Domestic sources of finance for such projects are extremely constrained.

India needs to take advantage of the global push for clean energy, closely examine its own coal-linked policies and engage deeply in discussions with key partners such as the United States and the European Union to attract investment and technology at scale.
